The Cherries Trees

The culture of cherry in Yonne developed following the catastrophe of Phylloxera which destroyed the vineyard.

In 1985, we thus took again an exploitation of orchards of cherry trees extending on about fifteen hectares with Mr. and Mrs. Martin, couple of nurserymen leaving to the retirement. This exploitation is spread then on the slopes of Are worth in the South of Auxerre on grounds where formerly the vines took root.

In 1987, family orchards were taken again on the commune of Saint Bris le Vineux one what made it possible to vary a little more the varieties.

On our premises, the gathering of cherries begins around the May 20th to end later two months in July. The spreading out of harvest be due to the presence of several varieties Montmorency, Burlat, Marmotte, Belge, Starking and Summit inter alia…

For the anecdote, name “marmot” comes from a local history. An inhabitant of Jussy was known under the nickname of Marmot. Having lost all its vines by will phylloxéra, it was accustomed to making long naps close to the cherry trees, only although it remained to him. One day, he discovered in a hedge a new cherry whose he assessed the quality: the tree resulted from a natural hybridization of bigarreau. It developed this new variety. The fruit became the cherry “Marmot”. It is a bigarreau, large, with flesh closes red and sweetened.

We are present on the market buildings at the time of the season of cherries: Sens Monday and Friday, Auxerre 7 days a week, Toucy saturdays and Chabllis Sunday. But we will be also charmed to accommodate to you during the gathering from May to July.
