Organic winegrowing in Yonne
The Resident of Auxerre produces since centuries of the wines, which formerly, for most famous like the "Clos de la Chainette" and the "Clos de Migraine" in Auxerre, equalized in notoriety more the great wines of France.
Various crises of the French vineyard (appearance of new diseases, overproduction, competition of the other areas…) deeply the vineyards of Yonne reached, including Chablisien. Forty years ago, it remained less than 3000 hectares of vines in Yonne against nearly 40.000 in 1850.
But the tenacity of certain producers and the passion of certain big bosses icaunais allowed the revival of the vine growing in Yonne since a score of years. Windfallen wood saw its surface of production increasing notably. Other vineyards lived a true rebirth. These efforts were recognized by the attribution of names of controlled origin with in particular,
Bourgogne Côte d'Auxerre, Saint Bris and Irancy for Auxerre region.
Among all these names, those of the Bougogne “Côtes d'Auxerre” whose production center is the village of Saint Bris le Vineux, located at the south-east of Auxerre, deserve an special attention because their best wines offer organoleptic characteristics worthy of large burgundies.
Bourgogne Côtes d'Auxerre
The center of the vineyards of the AOC Bourgogne “Côtes d'Auxerre” is the wine village of Saint Bris le Vineux located at ten kilometers in the south-east of Auxerre. In the North-East is the Chitry vineyard, in the south that of Irancy and in the west that Vaux.
Saint Bris le Vineux is the village of the Resident of Auxerre which produces the most wine: white, red, rosy and effervescent, in many regional names and with the assistance of many type of vines (pinot black, chardonnay, white grape, sauvignon, gamay…). It is moreover the cradle of the AOC Bourgogne “Côtes d'Auxerre”.
The produced wines are primarily resulting from the type of vines pinot black for the reds and the rosy ones and chardonnay for the white. These type of vines, which fear freezing, preferably profit from best the exposures i.e. the southern/south-eastern slopes, on the marnes and limestones of the average and higher kimméridgien (the same ones as in Chablis). The few feet of chardonnay or pinot that one can find on the plate or under exposures north are in general reserved for the development of creaming of Burgundy. The minimal density of plantation is of 7500 stocks to the hectare. The basic output with the hectare is for the red wines of 55 hectolitres and for the white wines of 60 hectolitres.
Planted surface is approximately 160 hectares. In 2008, production carried out by forty vine growers of the area, reached:
- in white (58 ha) 3387 hl, is 451.600 bottles,
- in red (105 ha) 5201 hl, is 693.000 bottles.
